No smoke without fire

Posted by CElliottUK (Reading, United Kingdom) on 23 February 2012 in Lifestyle & Culture.

This Winter my house decided to get it's own back...
Over Christmas the wood burning stove filled the house with smoke, then the drains blocked, then the front drive brickwork collapsed a little
The drains were quickly cleared by a man by jetting the drains, the affected area on driveway was sorted by me digging it up and re-packing with a few bags of sand. Which left the leaking flue, which by this time had left considerable smoke damage in the loft, and in all places that the smoke could get to via the "Void" areas in the house.
We got a quote to line the flue. These guys turned up, and failed to get the flue liner all the way down to the stove, but still wanted the full amount of money.
Time will tell whether it's been fixed or not.

You have my sympathy, it always happens in threes, it seems to take three men to fix a chimney and the purpose of the one standing is??

23 Feb 2012 8:05am

@Christine: He's the boss, whose sole role seems to be to argue that they should be paid for the full amount of the quote, even though they didn't complete the job(Chris "Bitter 'n Twisted" Elliott)

You mean they couldn't get the liner all the way in even with the foreman standing there uselessly on the roof supervising ! And I see the safety elf has made an appearance as well with the useless harness the guy's wearing !

23 Feb 2012 8:13am

@Doug: Useless is the kindest thing I can think of saying

Nigel from Avening, United Kingdom

Hope it works out - when they are working wood burners are magic aren't they ?

23 Feb 2012 8:24am

@Nigel: Ours is just excellent, and I'm really pleased with it. The only trouble is that I cannot, under any circumstances, stay awake when it's going. Fine under most circumstances, but a little rude if I have guests over!

Hope it works out.....

Great job on the fireplace. Must be well done ... but all the smoke you swallow it in the living room or kitchen. Artists of fire and smoke!, Best regards, Adela

I'd get the flat roof checked after those ladders have been on it.
We are thinking of a woodburner, but the external flue is frighteningly expensive so hence the "thinking"!
