Down the tip

Posted by
CElliottUK (Reading, United Kingdom) on 31 December 2010 in Documentary & Street.

It stupid to be excited about this, but one of the best innovations in Reading over the last 5 years has been a new municipal tip!
The old one was so inefficient that a trip to it with re-cycling, garden waste or whatever, inevitably resulted in a minimum 30 minute queue., and going there any-time after Christmas resulted in a 1-2 hour wait.
So it was with those memories that I took our re-cycling 2 days ago. No need to worry- in and out in 10 minutes, including my time in putting the right re-cyclables in the right bins.

Fascinating shot...well done. This is a scene that is unusual to my eye...we do not recycle here in quite the same way. Thanks for showing us this part of your life ! :-)

My first impression was it is a taxi rank in a bus /train station....
Looks a very well maintained recycle centre...The one in Soton wasnt as good....but then that is going back 7 years...Maybe now it has all changed....
Have a happy,healthy 2011.

Happy New Year 2U as well. You English blokes what pray tell is a tip. For me at least it's what I give the waiter for good service! LOL!

31 Dec 2010 11:34am

@J.R.: "Tip" a place you tip rubbish/garbage or what Americans call Crap(Crap means something completely different in UK English, and is reasonably rude!!!!!!)

mayoline from Hoorn, Netherlands

I´m in a weird, philosophical mood these days - so i´d like to think of this picture as an analogy for the end of this or any year - sorting out the things to keep and the ones to give away ;D Thanks for your company during this year Chris!

31 Dec 2010 3:19pm

@daniela scharnowski: That was indeed the idea of the shot. Getting rid of the old-making space for the new

A great way to see the old year out - recycling your used glass, paper and plastic We are very lucky in Auckland, we have colour bins that we put out on the sidewalk and they are collected. Happy New Year to you and yours.

Philip from South Wales, United Kingdom

Good grief looks like an airport terminal! We still have rusty ladder platforms and have to tip into separate large lorry container skips! Mind you, Reading has always been a bit posh - I believe you have a nice Waitrose as well!!!

Happy New Year!

31 Dec 2010 8:46pm

@Philip: It's all part of a closed loop system...Waitrose-Tip-Tip-Waitrose!

David from Avranches, France

Very nice, this is a very clean tip with everything perfectly marked out. Im not used to these standards. I like it.

glad for you! i remember the time not too long age when i was made fun of in england when i mentioned the way we recycle things in my country, and people who had been to "the continent" mocked the idea of different bins for different materials! your photo gives me hope that there always the possibility of learning and of changing one's ways! in this joyful spirit - a happy and prosperous new year to you, chris!
