Competitive spirit

Posted by
CElliottUK (Reading, United Kingdom) on 27 May 2011 in Lifestyle & Culture.

As well as taking a few shots in Prague, we had to sample the world famous Czech beer.
This was taken in "The Pub" a venue selected by Vojtech for it's quirkiness.
In the gloom, you might be able to see that each table has a beer dispenser in the middle. Getting a beer was simple-allocate yourself a number, hit that number on the control panel, pour yourself a beer-and your personal tab could be settled at the end of the evening.
But you might also notice the projector screen at the end of the room. This was showing our tables drinking performance against all the other tables-and even the pubs performance against the other pubs in the chain.
We thought that we were acquitting ourselves well, after all Brits, Czechs, Aussies and Americans aren't shy when it comes to a beer or two.
Well compared with a table in Paris, we were doing very badly-for every one of our pints, they were downing 3!

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

glad you explained this as the earlier link was so intriguing...could this take off in the UK?

27 May 2011 6:11am

@Ted: I really think it could! No arguing over "Who didn't buy a round", no whining about the length of queues at the bar, great place for stag and hen parties-why not!

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Nice place to have a drink... thanks for explanations. But i can see it's still possible to smoke there... so, not for me...

27 May 2011 6:21am

@Evelyne Dubos: There's a much larger non smoking area-so give it a try!

Luke from Spokane, United States

Looks like a lovely atmosphere!

27 May 2011 6:26am

@Luke: It actually had a great atmosphere, even though you might expect it to get rowdy, it didn't

David from Avranches, France

This looks like a great place, a smokers section too, everyones a winner.

Intriguing alcoholic documentary. A clever piece of marketing to bring out the worst in you (in the general sense of course, not personal :)

Cool pub.

A unique concept - I wonder if the beer is cheaper - no bar staff needed to pull the beers for you!

Elsabe from Johannesburg - Fourways, South Africa

A self service beer dispenser on each table is absolutely amazing. This concept will do very well in South-Africa, as we have one of biggest beer consumers in the world. Well captured.

This is an excellent interior shot. I like the deep color and the way you're processed the image. The account of the self-delivered beer was fascinating. Competitive drinking pub to pub is a new one for me.

Beer has never looked so romantic......such high tech and practical.

A new way to drink , excellent explanation , thanks !

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Do you need to book a table?
That will be the reason why it may not succeed over here, too much vertical drinking.

27 May 2011 5:36pm

@Curly: Nope there are punter operated pumps, on the bar, next to the bartender operated ones. What might kill it is our requirement to have 200 different beers being sold at once....

Thea from Leeuwarden, Netherlands

Looks a great place to me! no crowds in front to get a beer:)

Wild tabulation information. I've never heard of anything like that. I must get out more and away from the beach. Cool shot and great info.

I like the depth and the soft glow of the lights - interesting description, too!

This is even weirder than Vojtech told - listing scores of the tables / other pubs??? Oh my...

I like the green ceiling and how you handled the exposure. A very clever concept to get people to drink more!

28 May 2011 1:38pm

Philip from Reading, United Kingdom

that's a surefire way of getting utterly bladdered.

28 May 2011 5:12pm

@Philip: I chatted to the bar staff about that. Apparently, whilst tourists will accept"Sorry mate, we're closing" at which point they shuffle off, the locals just keep going all night....

Dutch from Neverwhere, United States

Ah but remember you could see straight afterwards hehe! Have you managed to capture the golem of Prague lurking in the shadows of any of your photographs? :D

CATCHLIGHT from Reading, United Kingdom

It's a lot more civilised than I had imagined from your description, but I agree with Phil.

Very funny pub. Looks like a great trip, zombies, weapons and beer, can't wait to see what's next.

The smokers caught my attention immediately, as it's been so long that our restaurants are non-smoking. Reading the comments for this image is a trip in itself, Chris.
