There was a Police Dog demonstration at the Guide Dogs for the Blind event-some action shots to follow.
I got chatting to this young Policeman, and he was clearly enthusiastic about his job, but what got me was the total respect that he had for his dog, and his dog had for him.

I'm submitting the shot to the "Planting the seeds" AM3 section, as this is an example of something that I really need to think about, and is an example of "Good, but no cigar...needs to work on technique" which is what "Planting seeds" is all about.

I always forget how police uniforms really fool the metering system (It's trying to make the black a dark grey, so everything else is overexposed), I had to really work hard to try and get some face detail in Photoshop,
I tried to work on this today, picking the right exposure point whilst taking some action pictures, it was really difficult.
I think that the way that "Planting the seeds" works is that once I've got better, I post up a "After" shot, that shows I've progressed....don't hold your breath, this is gonna be a long haul!

Great portrait of this dynamic duo.

CATCHLIGHT from Reading, United Kingdom

underexpose everything by half a stop and increase the dynamic range?

8 Oct 2012 7:06am

@CATCHLIGHT: Half a stop wouldn't have done it. The problem is dead simple, this Police Officer's uniform is as black as black can be, and he has a fair skin. There was also a harsh side light. The only way to stop the bleaching that you see on the right side of his face would be by metering for it. I've just got to train myself to do it. It's dead simple to think of when sitting here pontificating, but I always forget to do it "In the field"

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Pin sharp shot Chris, and I know the difficulties faced in harsh light. Thank heavens for Camera RAW at times like this.

8 Oct 2012 7:20am

@Curly: This was shot RAW! and I can say that before I extracted as much face detail as I could in Photoshop, the right hand side of his face was like he was wearing a "Phantom of the Opera" mask!

Richard from Ellemford, United Kingdom

'Young Policeman'? Aren't they all nowadays? Lovely portrait

8 Oct 2012 7:22am

@Richard: You know that you are not in your youth when Coppers look young! That said, Mrs E, was chatting to one lady, who turned out to be the wife of one of the Police that was due to retire in a few months, so there are at least some that are as ancient as the rest of us!

kiwisa from North Shore, New Zealand
