Thar she blows

Posted by
CElliottUK (Reading, United Kingdom) on 25 September 2013 in Architecture.

This whole sequence of shots is about a trip in the Yeovil, Lyme Regis Bridport area. Mrs E, Betty the Dog and I wandered around various beaches and National Trust Houses
This is at Forde Abbey
Now, as you all know, I really don't have much appreciation for art, but suddenly, everywhere we went, there were massive paintings, sculptures and other fine art exhibitions.
I looked at them for the first time, and , as you might expect from an untutored eye, saw some oddness
There was lots of erotica!
The odd thing was that there seemed to be an "Acceptable formula". Ladies could display 1 breast, but not two, men could be completely nude, all bar their penis,(Didn't people have public hair back then?)
But the one that blew me away was that it was perfectly OK to depict sex between animals and humans, but not between two humans
Here we have a statue of Leda being raped by a Swan Inside the house was a truly graphic, bordering on pornographic, painting depicting the same scene

Very interesting comment about the "norms" in this culture with a fine statue shot to accompany it. Well done.

Some people in the past had very odd ideas, now she looks like a fine sculpture, but the swan? Eh...no.

No, no, no.
You have it all wrong.
In the days before the cotton industry evolved to be he envy of the western world...before we had towels and towelling wardrobes...there was a time when stepping out of the shower meant that if the doorbell sounded and you had to cover yourself -or- you had to get dry...you simply reached for the nearest swan!):-

@Ted: Of course, silly me, now you've explained it I also understand what the picture of the nude man with the sheep was all about!!!!

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom
