River Cottage

Posted by
CElliottUK (Reading, United Kingdom) on 26 September 2013 in Food & Cuisine.

We visited River Cottage-Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's "Restaurant" near Axminster
For those of you who don't know Hugh, he's a celebrity chef, with a real passion for "Back to Basics/natural produce/sustainability" cooking
I was worried that the evening was too long and would be too stuffy (Little fingers pointed outwards, and everyone dressed up to the 9's). That fear was unwarranted, every moment from 6:30 to 11:30 was a delight, and most people wore jeans and scruffy tops.
You start off being transported by tractor trailer down a farm path to a Yurt, shown here, where a delightful Apple Brandy and various Canapes are offered.

I'd go there if only for being able to make a measured drawing of that fire - amazing piece of design !

@Ronnie 2¢: It was a delightfully simple design. On each of the four sides there was a hinged door that could be opened or closed affecting where the heat was directed, and how much oxygen was available to the fire. In this configuration the one facing us and the one behind it were open, the ones to the left and right were closed

The Mouse from Glasgow, United Kingdom

Now that is a place to go and eat, i understand about your worry of dress code, i would have been a jeans man meself.

26 Sep 2013 12:59pm

@The Mouse: Now that I know more about Hugh(I really knew nothing about him before going here), I really shouldn't have worried. Whilst he's tidied up a bit now, he's spent most of his career as a scruffy, hippy-like chef, and I doubt if he would ever wear a suit, unless he was meeting The Queen.

I think that there is definitely a time and a place for some chilled out scruffy eating and down to earth food. This looks like a top location. I never managed to catch the program when it was on TV.
